Joanne Brand, known as Jo Brand, was born May 3, 1957, Hastings, East Sussex and is a British comedienne. Brand's mother was a social worker and Jo Brand herself worked as a psychiatric nurse at the South London, Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital until the mid-1980's. She was persuaded to begin a career in stand up comedy by her agent and acquired the stage name, "The Sea Monster" due to her large size. In 1993, the transition into the mainstream was confirmed when she obtained her own series on Channel 4, 'Jo Brand Through The Cake Hole'. Her unique style came through as her jokes were delivered in a bored monotone, one line at a time, with long pauses in between. More recently her humour has softened and she has been a guest on such television shows as, 'Have I Got News For You', 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' and 'Qi'. She is now married, with two children. She has had success in straight acting, and has also written novels.
